Twitter charging for content?

In yesterday’s investor call it emerged that Twitter is planning a new feature known as “Super Follow”, a Patreon style subscription model that would mean users have access to exclusive content after paying a recurring fee.

The full details are likely to change as the launch gets closer but the example shown during Thursday's call included a $4.99-per-month subscription plan that comes with "subscriber-only newsletters," a "supporter badge," "community access," and other perceived perks.

Talking to Mashable, Twitter said:

"Exploring audience funding opportunities like Super Follows will allow creators and publishers to be directly supported by their audience and will incentivize them to continue creating content that their audience loves."

"Our purpose is to serve the public conversation," wrote the spokesperson. "As a part of that work, we are examining and rethinking the incentives of our service — the behaviors that our product features encourage and discourage as people participate in conversation on Twitter."

As of yet, it is not clear when Super Follow will launch or who will have access it.

It seems the subscription model is going nowhere with more and more springing up all the time. But the question is: Would you pay for Twitter content? Will the content be worth the user's hard earned money?

I guess we’ll find out soon!
